RN, LPN Requirement:
Renewal is dependent on meeting one of three of the following requirements:

  1. Practice nursing for a minimum of 960 hours during the previous five years.
  2. Successfully complete an approved re-entry program within the two years preceding renewal.
  3. Graduate from an OSBN-approved nursing program within the past five years.

ANP Requirement:

Practice Requirement:

  1. Practice as a NP for a minimum of 960 hours during the last five years; or
  2. Graduate from a NP education program within the past year; or
  3. Graduate from a NP education program and practice as a NP at least 192 hours within the last two years.

Continuing education: Complete 100 hours of continuing education within the past two years prior to renewal date. For new graduates (graduated within the past two years), the hours are prorated based on the length of time between graduation and the first renewal.

National certification as a NP may count for up to 50 hours of structured CE.

CNS Requirement:

  • Practice as a CNS for no less than 960 hours within the past five years prior to renewal, or have completed a re-entry program.
  • Complete 40 hours of continuing education during the past two years prior to renewal.
  • National certification as a CNS may count for up to 20 hours of structured CE.


CRNA Requirement:

  • Practice as a CRNA for a minimum of 850 hours within the past two years or graduate from a nurse anesthesia educational program within the past two years.
  • Hold current certification from the Council on Certification or Council of Recertification of Nurse Anesthetists.
  • Complete 40 hours of continuing education approved by the AANA during the past two years prior to renewal. For new graduates (graduated within the past two years), the hours are prorated based on the length of time between graduation and the first renewal.


CNA/CMA Requirements:

  • Work and be paid for at least 400 hours (approximately three months, full-time) of CNA duties in the two years immediately preceding the certificate expiration date. Volunteer work does not count for renewal. Caring for a family member counts for renewal only when it is paid employment.
  • Perform authorized duties as listed in the OSBN's rules under the supervision of a licensed nurse or under delegation by a Registered Nurse.
  • Employment as a CMA counts toward CNA renewal. However, work as a CNA does not count toward CMA renewal.

Special Requirement:
In addition, CMAs must have eight hours of medication-related continuing education during the two years immediately preceding the certificate expiration date.

Pain Management Continuing Education Requirement: All nurses and health care providers are mandated to complete seven hours of pain management - related continuing education within 24 months of the first renewal of their Oregon license. One of the seven total hours must be completed by taking the online course offered by the Oregon Pain Management Commission on their website at: http://www.oregon.gov/oha/OHPR/PMC/pages/index.aspx.

The remaining six hours can be of your choice, from CE courses that are accredited by an established accrediting body (such as another state board of nursing or national organization) for continuing nursing education. NOTE: This is a one-time requirement and does not have to be repeated for future renewals.

Renewal Period:
Expiration is midnight the day before your birthday in even or odd years based upon if your birth year was an even or odd numbered year. (i.e. 1977 = odd, 1976 = even). Renewal notices are sent out to email addresses on file with the OSBN office six-to-eight weeks prior to license expiration.
