Massachusetts Continuing Education Requirements

15 contact hours every 2 years (excluding those renewing for the first time).

At least 1 of the 15 hours must address Chapter 260 requirements for Sexual and/or Domestic Violence. Massachusetts provides this required course for licensees at https://chapter260training.org/courses/training/.

Pursuant to chapter 220 of the acts of 2018, as of November 7, 2018, applicants for initial licensure must complete a one-time course of training and education in the diagnosis, treatment and care of patients with cognitive impairments, including, but not limited to, Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
There is no prescribed course or number of education hours for this this training.  If you received any training or education in your academic nursing program, through professional staff development, conferences, seminars or continuing education in the diagnosis, treatment and care of patients with cognitive impairments including but not limited to, Alzheimer’s disease and dementia at any time then you meet the requirements of the training.  You must complete this requirement by November 7, 2022.

Practitioners who prescribe controlled substances shall be required, as a prerequisite to obtaining or renewing their professional licenses, to complete appropriate training relative to: (i) effective pain management; (ii) the risks of abuse and addiction associated with opioid medication; (iii) identification of patients at risk for substance use disorders; (iv) counseling patients about the side effects, addictive nature and proper storage and disposal of prescription medications; (v) appropriate prescription quantities for prescription medications that have an increased risk of abuse; and (vi) opioid antagonists, overdose prevention treatments and instances in which a patient may be advised on both the use of and ways to access opioid antagonists and overdose prevention treatments.

***NOTE: Beginning December 4, 2023, CNAs who are eligible to renew must use the new Health Profession Licensing System to renew their certification.

Physical Therapists and Physical Therapist Assistants are required, as a condition of license renewal, to complete a minimum of 24 points of Board recognized activities for maintaining continuing competence during the preceding biennial renewal period.

All renewals after July 31. 2024, an athletic trainers must complete two points in ethics, laws, and regulations governing practice in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, or some combination thereof.

Massachusetts ATs must renew their license every two years on the licensee's birth anniversary.   Requirements for Renewal of License, the continuing education requirements set forth in 259 CMR 7.01(1), and provide proof of the following certifications in effect for the entire renewal period: (a)   Emergency Cardiac Care certification; and (b)   BOC Certification.

CEUFast is unable to provide continuing education at this time.

Licenses must be renewed by May 31st of even-numbered years.  You must have 20 CEUs at the time you renew your license pursuant to 261 CMR Section 5.00.

Medical assistants in Massachusetts are not required to possess a certification, registration or license to work as a medical assistant.
