West Virginia CE Requirements (RN, LPN)

RN CE Requirement

Registered nurses are required to complete 12 hours of continuing education during each 2 (two) year renewal period from an approved CE provider. RN license renewal occurs every other year in even years. The current RN cycle started 11-1-2022 and ends 10-31-2024, the current RN license expiration date.

Special Requirements

Also, a requirement of 3 contact hours of CE for drug diversion training, best-practice prescribing of controlled substances training and training on prescribing and administration of an opioid antagonist if the RN will prescribe, administer, or dispense controlled substances, must be completed within 1 year of receiving his or her initial license from the Board.

LPN Requirement

LPNs in West Virginia are required to complete a total of 24 contact hours of CE and be employed as a practical nurse for 400 clock hours during each two (2) year reporting period to be eligible to renew their LPN license.

Special Requirements

LPNs must complete a one-time requirement of two (2) contact hours in end-of-life care, including pain management, to be reported with their CE during their first renewal or upon reinstatement. Additionally, they are required to complete three (3) contact hours on substance abuse during each subsequent reporting period. LPNs must also complete two (2) contact hours on mental health conditions common to veterans and their families, which is required during each reporting period.
