North Carolina Continuing Education Requirements

• 15 Contact Hours of continued education and 640 hours of active practice within previous 2 years 
• National Certification or Re-certification by a National Credentialing Body recognized by the Board

• Completion of a minimum of two (2) semester hours of post-licensure academic education related to nursing practice

• 15 Contact Hours of continued education and Authoring or Co-Authoring a nursing-related article, paper, book or book chapter
• 15 Contact Hours of continued education and developing and conducting a nursing continuing education presentation or presentations totaling a minimum of five contact hours, including program brochure or course syllabi, objectives, date and location of presentation, and approximate number of attendees

50 contact hours of continuing education is the requirement for one contact hour of continuing education every 2 years. A minimum of 20 hours of the required 50 hours must be within the nurse practitioner's national certification. The 20 hours must have the approval from a national credentialing body (ANCC) or ACCME. The remaining CE hours must be at the advanced practice level.

Prior to prescribing controlled substances, nurse practitioners shall have completed a minimum of 1 CE hour within the preceding 12 months on one or more of the following topics:

• Controlled substances prescription practices
• Prescribing controlled substances for chronic pain management
• Recognizing signs of controlled substance abuse or misuse; or
• Non-opioid treatment options as an alternative to controlled substances

Instead of the CE requirement, you have the option of one of the following:

You must meet the following eligibility requirements to renew. Nurse Aides working in a non-nursing home setting are responsible for making sure their job duties qualify for renewal:

• Performed at least eight (8) hours of nursing or nursing-related services for pay within your current registration/listing period.
• The nursing or nursing-related services performed were delegated and supervised by a Registered Nurse (RN).

No continuing education is required for renewal. Please check with your facility/employer to ensure CEUFast courses are accepted. 

You must notify a Registered Nurse (RN) to complete the Online Employment Verification Form.

Physical Therapists must renew their license annually by January 31st. In the 25-month reporting period, the PT will earn 30 continuing competency points.  1 point=1 credit hour

**CEUFast courses are approved by the Florida Board of Physical Therapy Association.  Your state authorizes courses approved by another state board.

Occupational therapist must renew their license annually by June 30th.  OTs and OTAs are both required to complete fifteen (15) continuing competence activity points annually. One point in ethics is mandatory for this renewal period and every renewal thereafter.

Athletic Trainers shall renew their license annually and must provide proof of BOC certification. 

A licensee shall complete 75 contact hours of continuing education during a three-year license renewal period. Contact hours are defined as the number of actual clock hours spent. One semester hour of credit is equivalent to 10 contact hours.

CNM are required to maintain national certification through the Certificate Maintenance Program of the American Midwifery Certifying Board, which includes meeting continuing education requirements (20 CE hours) or passage of a re-examination.

CNS are required to maintain national certification. If recognized by the Board as a CNS without national certification prior to 4/1/2023:

• Submit at least 75 hours of continuing education, including 25 hours of pharmacotherapeutics for the previous 5-year period, and attest to 1000 hours of practice; OR
• Submit at least 150 hours of continuing education, including 50 hours of pharmacotherapeutics for the previous 5-year period.

Respiratory care professionals must complete a minimum of 12 hours of Category I Continuing Education (CE) activities related to the licensee's practice of respiratory care. At least six contact hours shall be obtained each reporting year from workshops, panels, seminars, lectures, or symposiums that provide direct interaction between the speakers and participants.

Medical assistants in North Carolina are not required to be licensed, earn a specific education, or complete a prescribed training regimen.
