South Dakota Continuing Education Requirements

Continuing education units (CEUs) are not required for nursing licensure.  South Dakota does have a minimum practice requirement: the nurse must provide verification of employment in nursing for a minimum of 140 hours in any 12-month period during the previous 6 years, or a total accumulation of 480 hours during the previous 6 years.  If the nurse cannot provide such verification, an RN or LPN Refresher Course consisting of an 80-hour self-study theoretical portion and 80 hours of supervised clinical practice which meets Board of Nursing standards must be completed.

An actively registered CNA may renew 90 days or less prior to expiration, and must:
Have completed a minimum of 12 hours of training per year (nursing school courses are not applicable);
Have a minimum of 12 hours of employment as a nurse aide for monetary compensation during the preceding 24 months;
Submit the CNA Online Renewal application.

Physical Therapists and Physical Therapy Assistant license expires annually on the first day of January. An applicant to renew a license shall complete 15 continuing education hours in a one-year period in professional education activities updating competency in physical therapy.

An Occupational Therapy license expires annually on the first day of January. An applicant to renew a license shall complete 12 continuing competency points in a one-year period in professional education activities updating competency in occupational therapy and practice.

All Athletic Trainers' licenses will expire on the first day of July. A license may be renewed every year.  An applicant for renewal must obtain 25 hours of continuing education annually or maintain certification by the Board of Certification.

BOC requires Athletic Trainers to complete 50 CEUs within the 2-year reporting period.

As a condition of license renewal, respiratory care practitioners must complete at least 20 credit hours of continuing education biennially from a program sponsored by the American Association for Respiratory Care or an inservice program conducted by a hospital or related institution licensed pursuant to SDCL chapter 34-12. The program must be related to the practice of respiratory care and designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of the practitioner.

South Dakota does not require certification for medical assistants, but they do require registration with the Board of Medical and Osteopathic Examiners.
