  • Must work in nursing or nursing related activities for at least 8 hours during each 2 year renewal cycle.
  • Private care hours are not accepted in Indiana.

*The administrator may approve attendance at outside workshops and continuing education programs related to that individual's responsibilities in the facility. Documented attendance at these workshops and programs meets the requirements for inservice training.

There are no CEU requirements for the renewal of RN licenses in Indiana. Registered Nurses are not required to obtain continuing education for regular licensure renewal. RNs attempting to renew a license that has been expired for 3 years or more and who are not currently licensed in another jurisdiction will need to contact the IPLA for additional guidance.

Advanced Practice Nurses with Prescriptive Authority must obtain at least thirty (30) hours of continuing education, at least eight (8) hours of which must be in pharmacology.

Per IC 35-48-3-3.5 beginning July 1, a practitioner must have 2 hours of CE in opioid prescribing and opioid abuse in order to renew a CSR.

The hours must be from an approved sponsor and can count toward the 8 hour pharmacology requirement. If an APRN hold multiple CSRs, the 2 hours will count for the renewal requirement for all of them.

At a minimum twenty-two (22) hours of continuing competency activities.  Two (2) hours must be in an ethics and Indiana jurisprudence course as it relates to the practice of physical therapy.

Special Requirements

A licensee who renews a license shall complete no less than thirty (30) hours of continuing education in courses or programs approved by any of the approved sponsors in each two (2) year renewal period.

Continuing education acquired in any area other than that related to the practice of midwifery will not be accepted.

Continuing education credit units or clock hours must be obtained within the renewal period and may not be carried over from one (1) licensure period to another.

At least one (1) hour of pharmacology must be completed annually.

At least one (1) hour in each two (2) year renewal period shall be completed regarding the following:
-Emergency life support procedures
-Identification of high risk births for mothers
-Identification of potential complications during labor
-At least 50% of all continuing education must be obtained from courses attended in-person.
