Delaware is one of the oldest states in the United States, and has a deep and rich history that goes beyond any other place throughout the country. It’s nickname, “The First State”, is seemingly fitting as it was part of the 13 original colonies in the American Revolution and became the first state to ratify the Constitution of the United States.
However, if you look deeper into the state’s history, you’ll find that it had some outstanding nurses who served in both World War I and World War II. At the state’s capital in Dover, a monument was recently erected at Legislative Hall, featuring a total of 17 laser-etched images of women who served in various roles throughout the military – nurses, soldiers, pilots, and others.
Some of the great nurses that the monument recognizes includes: Lt. Ruth Haddick Dorsman, an Army nurse during World War II, Elizabeth Lawton Cerchio, a Navy hospital apprentice during World War II, Mary Hodgson, a Red Cross nurse who served in France during World War II; three Army nurses who served in Vietnam, and Lt. Margaret Ann Secora Tos, an Army nurse in Korea.
All of these women fought bravely to protect their country, and the state of Delaware is honored to display their names and photos to reflect their accomplishments. Today, men and women continue to serve in the military as nurses and play a crucial role in our armed forces.

Must complete 24 hours of approved continuing education and perform at least 64 hours of nursing-related services for pay in a health care setting under the supervision of a licensed nurse or physician during each 24-month certification period in order to qualify for recertification.
To renew, you must attest that you have met one of the following practice requirements in the role and population focus area in which you are licensed:
If you have prescriptive authority, your prescriptive authority expires at the same time as your license. To renew prescriptive authority, you must attest to completing ten hours of continuing education (CE) in pharmacology/pharmacotherapeutics in the past two years.
2 hours in controlled substances prescribing practices, treatment of chronic pain, or related topics.
Active Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) – must complete 24 contact hours during the following renewal period:
March 1 to February 28 of the previous even-numbered years (2018-2020, etc.).
All contact hours must be earned through an approved method or by an approved provider.

Licenses expire on February 28 of even years. LPNs must attest that the continuing education hours have been completed. Renewal also requires practice of at least 1,000 hours in the past five years or 400 hours in the past two years.
The required CEU's, 3.0 units, shall be completed no later than January 31 of every odd-numbered year and every 2 years after such date. 1 CEU will be given for every 10 hours of approved continuing education
