RNs are required to complete 30 contact hours every two years. A one-time 4-hour bioterrorism course and
4 hours of cultural competency every renewal is required. 
Special Requirements
  • Four (4) hours bioterrorism (one time requirement)
  • Four (4) hours Cultural Competency and Implicit Bias every renewal cycle.
  • Two (2) hours training in stigma, discrimination and unrecognized bias towards persons who have acquired or at a high risk of acquiring human immunodeficiency virus to be completed within two (2) years after beginning to provide or supervise the provision of emergency medical services in a hospital or primary care.

In addition to complying with the RN renewal requirements, APRNs have to take an additional fifteen (15) CEs directly related to their specialties, for a total of forty-five (45) hours of continuing education, to include the requirements below:
Special Requirements
  • Two (2) hours suicide prevention course completed every 4 years.
  • Two (2) hours substance use and abuse course completed every renewal cycle.
  • Two (2) hours for APRNs registered to dispense controlled substances; related to the misuse and abuse of controlled substances, the prescribing of opioids or addiction.
  • Four (4) hours Cultural Competency and Implicit Bias every renewal cycle.
  • Maintain APRN portfolio as per: APRN Portfolio.
  • Eight (8) hours on treating and managing patients with opioid or other SUD including appropriate clinical use of all FDA approved drugs for treatment of an SUD is a one time requirement for all DEA registered practitioners.
  • Four (4) hours bioterrorism (one time requirement).
  • Two (2) hours training in stigma, discrimination and unrecognized bias towards persons who have acquired or at a high risk of acquiring human immunodeficiency virus to be completed within two (2) years after beginning to provide or supervise the provision of emergency medical services in a hospital or primary care.
