Previously, nursing was the only health profession in Georgia that didn’t verify continued competency.CEO of the Georgia Nurses Association Debbie Bartlett said that lack of verification was used against the advancement of nursing, so moving forward, the nursing profession will be held to the same standard as the rest of the health profession.
This law intended to verify competency will sooner affect RNs who must complete their CE requirements by the Jan. 31, 2016 renewal deadline. The competency tracking mandate for LPNs will begin in 2017, and their renewal deadline will be March 31 of that year.Georgia nurses will have up to five options to complete their continuing education requirements, including RNs obtaining 30 CE contact hours and LPNs earning 20 CE contact hours biennially through a board certified provider.
