Multiple options to renew for this profession and state.

1. Active Nursing Practice: Applicants must either have 1,000 hours of active nursing practice within the last five years, or have graduated from an approved nursing program in that period.

2. Continuing Education: Alternatively, 30 contact hours of continuing education within the two years before renewal can meet the requirement.

3. College/University Coursework: Nurses can also submit relevant college coursework in place of contact hours. Each semester hour counts for 15 contact hours, provided the course is nursing-related and the applicant earns a grade of “C” or higher. An official transcript is needed for proof.

Special Requirements

Implicit Bias Training: As of April 1, 2022, licensees must attest that they’ve completed an implicit bias training course. This is a one-time requirement during the renewal process.

Maryland Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)

Certificate holders will be able to renew online 60 days before and 30 days after the expiration date of their certification (the 28th day of the certificate holder's birth month). Information about the website is included in the renewal application that the CNA will receive. Maryland CNAs are required to work a min of 16 hours during the certification period. CNAs are not required to obtain continuing education to renew their license.
