Minnesota Continuing Education Requirements

RNs shall earn twenty-four (24) contact hours of continuing education every two years for licensure renewal.

• Two (2) of the twenty (20) hours of continuing education each cycle shall be on professional ethics directly related to the practice of physical therapy.
• Beginning January 1, 2019, when a license is renewed each year in compliance with Minnesota Statutes, section 148.73, a licensee must complete self-study and take a jurisprudence examination on the Board of Physical Therapy Practice Act, and receive a passing score as established by the board on an open-book examination. The examination may be retaken as many times as is necessary to pass.

LPNs shall earn twelve (12) contact hours of continuing education every two years for licensure renewal.

• Current APRN certification on file at the Board will meet the twenty-four (24) contact hours of continuing education during a twenty-four (24) month period of registration requirement for the RN license (RNs are required to complete twenty-four [24] contact hours every two [2] years). 
• Current certification in the role and population for which the individual is licensed must be on file with the Board.

• To practice advanced practice registered nursing in Minnesota an individual must be licensed and currently registered as an RN and as an APRN.

• Please check with your facility/employer to ensure CEUfast courses are accepted. 
• There is no requirement to submit in-service documentation specifically related to the Nursing Assistant Registry. Nursing homes and boarding care homes must follow state and federal regulations.

• Home care services shall be provided in the last twelve (12) months.

PTs and PTAs licenses are renewed on an annual basis. PTs and PTAs shall earn twenty (20) contact hours of continuing education every two (2) years.

• The remaining contact hours may be related to occupational therapy practice, the delivery of occupational therapy services, or to the practitioner's current professional role.
• Contact hours shall be conducted by a sponsor approved by the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) or by individuals who have education, training, and experience by reason of which the individuals should be considered experts on the subject matter of the activity.

• A minimum of one-half of the required contact hours must be directly related to occupational therapy practice.
• The remaining contact hours may be related to occupational therapy practice, the delivery of occupational therapy services, or to the practitioner's current professional role.
• Contact hours shall be conducted by a sponsor approved by the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) or by individuals who have education, training, and experience by reason of which the individuals should be considered experts on the subject matter of the activity.

APRNs are required to maintain national certification.
APRNs authorized to prescribe controlled substances must complete 2 hours that include content on best practices in prescribing opioids and controlled substances every renewal.

• Current APRN certification on file at the Board will meet the twenty-four (24) contact hours of continuing education during a twenty-four (24) month period of registration requirement for the RN license (RNs are required to complete twenty-four [24] contact hours every two [2] years). 
• Current certification in the role and population for which the individual is licensed must be on file with the Board.

• To practice advanced practice registered nursing in Minnesota an individual must be licensed and currently registered as an RN and as an APRN.

• At least five contact hours within a three-year reporting period must involve adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation and either infant cardiopulmonary resuscitation or neonatal advanced life support.
• Continuing education program topics may include, but are not limited to, traditional midwifery care in the prenatal, labor, birth, and postpartum and newborn periods; assessing contraindications; care in emergency situations; ethics; and nutrition.

• A minimum of one-half of the required contact hours must be directly related to occupational therapy practice.
• The remaining contact hours may be related to occupational therapy practice, the delivery of occupational therapy services, or to the practitioner's current professional role.
• Contact hours shall be conducted by a sponsor approved by the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) or by individuals who have education, training, and experience by reason of which the individuals should be considered experts on the subject matter of the activity.

• BOC requires fifty (50) credit hours every reporting period and Emergency Cardiac Care (ECC) certification.

• RTs must complete a minimum of twenty four (24) contact hours of board-approved continuing education in the two years preceding license renewal and attest to completion of continuing education requirements by reporting to the board.
• A licensee may apply no more than a combined total of eight (8) hours of continuing education in the areas of management, risk management, personal growth, and educational techniques to a two-year reporting period.

• There are no Continuing Education Unit (CEU) requirements for the first renewal.
