Minnesota Continuing Education Requirements

If you are a RN, you must complete 24 contact hours of continuing education during a 24 month period of registration. This is a ratio of one contact hour for each month of registration. If your period of registration is less than or more than 24 months, the same ratio applies.

If you are a LPN, you must complete 12 contact hours of continuing education during a 24 month period of registration. This is a ratio of one contact hour for each two months of registration. If your period of registration is less than or more than 24 months, you apply the same ratio.

There are no additional continuing educational requirements for the APRN license renewal. Current APRN certification on file at the Board will meet the 24 contact hours of continuing education during a 24-month period of registration requirement for the RN license (RNs are required to complete 24 contact hours every 2 years). Current certification in the role and population for which the individual is licensed must be on file with the Board.

You must work at least 8 hours as a paid nursing assistant every 24 months.

The examination may be retaken as many times as is necessary to pass.

Three years after the date of initial licensure and every three years thereafter, a licensed traditional midwife must complete a minimum of 30 contact hours of board-approved continuing education and attest to completion of continuing education requirements by reporting to the board. At least five contact hours within a three-year reporting period must involve adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation and either infant cardiopulmonary resuscitation or neonatal advanced life support.

Continuing education program topics may include, but are not limited to, traditional midwifery care in the prenatal, labor, birth, and postpartum and newborn periods; assessing contraindications; care in emergency situations; ethics; and nutrition.

A licensed occupational therapy assistants must obtain a minimum of 18 contact hours of continuing education in the two-year licensure period.  All continuing education coursework must be obtained between the effective date and expiration date of the license.

Licensure must be renewed annually on or before July 1 of each year.

An athletic trainer shall meet the professional development requirements of the BOC in order to maintain BOC certification. BOC requires Athletic Trainers to complete 50 CEUs within the 2-year reporting period.

License must be renewed every two years from initial licensure.Licencees must complete 24 hours of board-approved continuing education.  

Minnesota law doesn't require medical assistants to obtain a certificate for employment, however many employers do require a certificate.
