Tired of working long hours at the hospital and not seeing your family? Well, I have news for you. You can have an RN career from the comfort of your own home.

You may have heard of nurses working from home and thought, “that’d be a great opportunity to spend time with my family,” or “I could use the extra cash,” but then dismissed that option.

You may have thought work at home opportunities for nurses are limited and far in-between. After all, you’ve got to work in a hospital, office, clinic or at the very least, a patient’s home to practice nursing, right? Wrong.

As nurses, you have knowledge that is very valuable and you can provide that knowledge outside of hospital walls.

Nurses are supposed to protect their patients, and the fact that nurses are the most trusted of all professionals indicates that they largely fulfill this duty.

A recruiter once asked prospective hires: “If you were given $3 billion and told you could do anything with it, what would you do?”

How would you answer?

If “travel the world” or “travel somewhere I’ve always wanted to go” are on your list of things to do, here’s some great news: you can get paid to see the world. No $3 billion check required.

The gig is called nursing abroad, and the job description varies: durations last from weeks to years, duties include anything from talking with patients to handling scalpels, and the world is covered, from Argentina to Zimbabwe. Nursing abroad means you’re helping address the international nursing shortage and learning in the process—not to mention going on exotic trips on your days off.

If you’re tired of the same old scrubs in the same old hospital, you might consider expanding your horizons by offering up your services in a new part of the world.

There’s no doubt that male nurses are in the minority. According to Mid America Nazarene University, for the 3.2 million female nurses nationwide, there are only 333,000 male nurses. That’s one man for every 9.5 women. However, those numbers are steadily increasing. Between 1970 and 2013, the proportion of male nurses more than doubled from 3.9 percent to 8.1 percent.

Whether you are a male nurse or work by their side, here are a couple helpful reminders that break the all-too-common stereotypes about men in nursing.

If you are thinking about advancing your nursing career from a CNA to an LPN, or an LPN to an RN and beyond, kudos to you.

While going to school and studying for nurse exams is no easy feat, CNAs make an average of about $10 - $14 an hour, while LPNs on average start in the early $20 range and RNs fall in the early $30 range, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

If there’s one thing that every nurse will come across in his or her career, it’s a difficult patient. Sometimes, the sweet patients that make the long hours and tired feet worthwhile are outshined by that one ornery, demanding or hostile patient who is miserable, and finds a way to share that misery with anyone who comes within a few feet of him or her.

You and your fellow staff may find yourselves avoiding their calls, and delaying their checkups, but the fact is, even patients with the worst attitudes deserve the best treatment possible.

You may be working in the healthcare profession, but that doesn’t mean you always take care of your health. But believe us, we aren’t judging, with long work hours and a laundry list of things to do, it’s easy to put your needs last on the list, especially sleep.

According to a 2011 Medscape publication, the average American nurse gets by on 6.8 hours of sleep, but there plenty of nurses who are working 12 hour shifts with even fewer hours of rest.

Congratulations! You're considering or have already embarked upon the journey of becoming a nurse. I can think of few professions that carry more rewards than nursing. Being a nurse takes a special kind of person, one who is caring yet capable of working under extreme pressure. Multitasking is a nurse's best friend: You will need finely honed multitasking skills once you graduate and become a nurse. Prioritizing while in nursing school will help you develop those critical multitasking skills as well as get you to graduation relatively unscathed.

For the most part, I think all of us nurses love what we do. We wouldn't have become nurses in the first place if we didn't. Our job is stressful in ways that many other jobs aren't, and it takes a very special person to become a nurse. Alongside that stress, however, comes job satisfaction and rewards that cannot be found in any other vocation either. There is nothing better than nursing patients back to health and receiving their love and appreciation in return. That's probably the best part of our job. So, what is the worst part? All nurses face mandatory overtime. It is often a necessary part of the job, especially if there is an unanticipated emergency in your hospital's jurisdiction. We have all worked shifts far longer than we should have, and perhaps some of us have made patient errors as a result. I hope you haven't, but the reality is you probably have; I know I have. This brings about a very important question that everyone in our vocation asks: How do I survive mandatory overtime?

Before I answer this question, however, let's go over some statistics I reported a few blog posts back that discuss exactly how many nurses work mandatory overtime when on duty. A shocking 43 percent of nurses, when polled, reported that the amount of overtime they work in their jobs has increased. In fact, 77 percent of nurses put in twelve-hour shifts. Because of extended shifts and heavy patient loads, nearly 100 percent of nurses complain that they are already fatigued before they begin their shift.

The phrase “health care” is very important to nurses. We got into the health care industry because we “care”; it’s definitely the operative word in the phrase for us. So, why is it that people seem to think we don’t actually care? Well, we’re fatigued and overworked and, consequently, our patients suffer as a result. If there is any industry that shouldn’t be big business, it’s the medical industry. Nurses stretched beyond their capacity just to save money is wrong, plain and simple. Nursing fatigue is a real and avoidable problem, and all health care facilities should make it a point to reduce nurse fatigue.
