Q&A with Dr. Alyssa King

Q: What does this new position mean to you, both professionally and personally?

Professionally, this position will allow me to spread my wings and truly, fully immerse myself in all the glory that is nursing continuing education. I am committed to maintaining my steadfast dedication to quality and providing our healthcare professionals with evidence-based course content that they desire and that they need in order to do what they do every day. Personally, I have so much love and passion for what I get to do, and I am just so excited to continue to grow myself with a company that has been devotedly prioritizing the continuing education of healthcare professionals for over 23 years!

Q: How has your time as a Nurse Planner at CEUfast prepared you for this next step?

My Nurse Planner role has prepared me perfectly for my new role. It has helped me to establish my foundation working in nursing continuing education, to understand the ins and outs and all the nuances of maintaining our accreditations, to become truly skilled in crafting high-quality content for my fellow nursing professionals, and to harness my skills in presenting educational material in a way that is most intuitive and engaging for all types of learners.

Q: Youve earned multiple degrees and certifications. What drives your passion for education?

I just love to learn. I dont ever want to stop. I dont think any of us should stop! Education opens doors, opens minds, and it leads to the generation of more questions. Inquiry leads to investigations for how we can develop solutions to our problems. I think that every learning experience in my life has helped make me the person I am today; all little puzzle pieces that Im learning to put together and want to do something with in my life. I believe that all of our unique lived experiences provide us with our own unique perspectives. Immersing yourself in different groups of people with different lived experiences gives you the chance to learn from others. A lot of my focus in specializing my education and training in the specific areas that I have chosen (pediatrics, psychiatry, perinatal mental health) is because they are the most vulnerable and need the most support. I am very thankful for each opportunity I have had to learn and expand myself and my nursing career and I plan to spend the rest of my life sharing these experiences with others and fiercely advocating for these underserved patient populations, many of whom often feel unheard.

Q: What advice do you have for nurses pursuing advanced education or leadership roles?

I would encourage these nurses to pursue what you are most passionate about. The nursing profession has so many wonderful career opportunities, some you might never have even heard about. Allow your lived nursing experiences influence and inform your next move, encourage yourself to try new things and leave your comfort zone because this is how we grow, and never forget what you bring to the table. Imposter Syndrome is a very real thing that often affects us as nurses, especially those of us who are experienced nurses entering a role that we will be novice at once again. When you get that new position, if you have met the qualifications and you have put the work in, you belong, you are good enough, you deserve your role, and you will rebuild that confidence in yourself and your abilities again soon!

Q: What trends in nursing education are you most excited about right now?

Although the COVID-19 pandemic was extremely trying for us all, especially for those of us who worked at the bedside in inpatient settings, one positive thing that has come out of it is the growing recognition of the importance of mental health. It has been gaining more exposure and importance in nursing curriculum, rightfully so, and it has become a focus to prioritize nurse mental health as well. In fact, it is my soapbox that I talk to all of my students about. We need to take care of ourselves in order to take the best care of our patients. This is one of my greatest passions and I am so glad that its importance is being seen so much more clearly now on a national scale.

Q: Who has inspired you most in your nursing journey?

Oh wow. This is a hard one. Im one of those people who are inspired by so many and believe that everyone in my life serves a special purpose. First, way back when, Id say it was the kiddos, children in general, even when I was one myself, who pushed me into pediatric nursing, I just wanted to help them. I am also very much inspired by so many amazing teachers I have had in my life; I have just wanted to leave a positive impact on a student like the impact that has been made on me to just love learning so much. I have been so privileged to have some of the best college professors, instructors, clinical faculty, and nurse preceptors, who have all helped shape me into the nurse I am today. I still very much look up to and idolize these individuals. Finally, I am constantly inspired by my wife, my family, and my friends, who encourage me to follow all of my dreams, regardless of how very many I do have! I am one lucky girl.
